a patio poem
by lewis edward watts

on a porch swing-
a green one,
if memory serves-
the temperature
in optimal range
for jacketry,
i saw a red phone misbehave,
and plastic and glass
stood side by side;
proud materials,
strong and trustworthy,
faithfully holding both
ice
and
drink-
a ten-minute airing of
griev.

went through a metamorphosis
(ka-ka, ka-ka, ka-kafka)
and became
an hour's chat
(and our chat?
it was good)
but what i want to know is:
were the stars out that night?

i never even looked.
