high heads on wattled neck.

Hanging in the kitchen among the mixing bowls and root beer...
And, some friendly kitchen roosters.

on roosters.

In high school my sister painted roosters. It was her best and most frequently painted subject. She had such a knack for the feathers, the gradual color changes from breast to wing to tail, the high heads on wattled neck, the thin bone legs down to claw feet. I always envied her talent, admired her brushstroke, the effortless daisies painted for our grandmother's kitchen, the noble zebra that lived on my parent's dresser, sketched in such detail. But mostly I loved her roosters. Her roosters, and the way I imagined she'd cock her head to the side, ever so slightly and delicately while painting them.
